2015, Body of My Ancestors, Deanne Gilson, held at the Art Gallery of Ballarat.

In this body of work Gilson relives her own story and in doing so her artwork gives
future voice to her ancestors. The narratives within her artwork are personal but reflect
the story of so many others. In spite of the shameful treatment historically meted out to
Aboriginal peoples across Australia, Gilson’s artwork retains a positive element that inspires
hope. She has created a platform from which to show others and future generations how
to re-engage with culture and how to continue the yarning and their Dreaming through art
practices.

Written by Principal Supervisor Dr Liza McCosh – for the catalogue to accompany this exhibition, secondary supervisor Professor Brian Martin. For Master of Arts, Deakin University, Nikeri.
